This sounds a little too complex for a calculated field, as it would require a nested if/then statement on top of the SQL query. As mentioned above, renaming the Title column is definitely a quick solution for specific lists, and it does work nicely. My preference is to hide it or create a new content type altogether to avoid unforeseen issues. There are known limitations if and when there is a need to rename it back to 'Title'.
